Sun And Fun - Lakeland,
Ref-1
Ref-2
to go to Sun And Fun is to go on Friday or early Saturday, camp out in a tent
around the lake.
Bring a cooler and lots of beer or whatever. They server a great breakfast for
$10, and it will last you all day. In the morning you can look at all the
exhibits, thousands of airplanes and go to talks. I like to stand at the side
of the runway with a scanner tied to the tower frequency and watch the
thousands of planes landing, up to 6 at once on two runways. I've seen three
twins land at once on the long runway, watched a Russian jet land and climb up
the tail of a king air. In the afternoon, the airshow goes from 1-5 PM, then a
lot of these airplanes try to take off. At night it's time to drink some beer
or whatever (Rum and coke is my favorite) and socialize - with the
thousands of others next to you. Last year I got a ride in a T34 - what a
blast..
1997 - Great weather, lots of planes and things to see and do!! Tent camping was great!! Were going to have some interesting comments of how Sun-N-Fun Inc. treats campers - we may never go to this event again!!! |

Cedar Key Sidewalk Art FestFly in to (CDK), International Airport (CDK - 2355' x 100' and guess what - this airport is on an island 2355' in diameter - WATER on both ends!! If the weather seems bad - fog or light rain, as usually happens, file IFR, JAX center can follow you down to 2000'. Use your backup GPS to go over the island of CDK. Many times there will be fog or clouds 1500'-3000' over the mainland, but almost always over the island, there is usually an open hole that you can safely get down through. If you never flown to CDK, its a must. The last 22 miles of the flight is over very pretty blue water. The main island of Cedar Key is about 3/4 miles in diameter with a population of about 900. During the Festival the population grows to 40,000!! There is not a lot of parking space at the uncontrolled airport. If you park in the grass, watch out for small rocks, lots of soft sand etc. A taxi will pick you up and take you downtown - call him on the unicom on the way in! On downwind, leave room for the plane ahead of you to back-taxi on the runway!!
Ask the taxi driver where the best food is. I usually eat downtown in the
restaurant at 'Cook's Cafe" on 2nd Street, its back from the street - the
grouper sandwich is great. Remember to stop in the candy shop,
Sweet Memories
(352-543-6230), in the tourist area and tell John and Barbara The Irishman
from the Civil Air Patrol sent you!! There home made fudge is great, try the
Key Lime fudge!! Art Fest 9 am to
5 pm. CDK Chamber (352)-543-5600 - 10am - 2pm Mon-Thurs!
